The Statistical Yearbook, new digitised period 1912-1946

posted 15/12/2014

Barcelona City Council's General Library and the Department of Statistics have continued with the digitisation of this highly important reference publication: the Anuari estadístic de la ciutat de Barcelona (City of Barcelona Statistics Yearbook). So far, the collection has been digitised up to 1946.

The Anuari estadístic, as with most long-term publications, went through various changes throughout its life. Thanks to the digitisation of its 1912 to 1920 issues, we are now making available to the public its first complete period, from 1902 to 1920, when it was originally called Anuario estadístico de la ciudad de Barcelona. This period is included in the Old Catalan Periodicals Archives (ARCA) collections, which now belong to Memòria Digital de Catalunya [Digital Memory of Catalonia].

We do not know what the exact historical or organisational circumstances were at Barcelona City Council which led to the halt to the publication of the Anuari between 1921 and 1926. Barcelona's statistical data began to be published again in 1927, but as supplements to the Barcelona Municipal Gazette [ Gaceta municipal de Barcelona], under the title of Estadística: anexo de la Gaceta municipal.

The Municipal Gazette's digitisation has also helped to make these documents from Estadística available on e-media, up to the year 1946, given that they were bound together with the Gazette and the other supplements.

The Municipal Gazette's Estadística was published separately from 1947 on.

We believe it is necessary to highlight the importance of having access to statistical data over time that tells us how Barcelona has evolved. This is one of the reasons why the publication is regarded by researchers as a benchmark work for studying the demography and history of Barcelona from the start of the 20th century.

And with this project the General Library is pursuing its goal of preserving municipal documents through the digitisation and incorporation of digital archives into ARCA, as well as helping to publicise them and make them accessible.
