Conferences on the impact of tourism in preserving the Art Nouveau heritage and on the use of social media networks for disseminating that heritage

posted 03/05/2011

"Tourism and preserving the Art Nouveau heritage: a source of funding... a source of problems?" that is the issue up for discussion at the Historical Lab to be held at the Auditori CX La Pedrera on 4 June. These conferences will feature discussions on the sustainability of buildings and the solutions that can be applied to buildings that attract large numbers of tourists. The speakers, who come from all around Europe and beyond, will be discussing the cases of La Pedrera (Casa Milà) in Barcelona, The Museum Horta in Brussels, The Glasgow School of Art in Scotland, the Palau Cueto in Havana and the Crespi d'Adda planned industrial colony in the region of Lombary, among others.

During the multilateral exchange to be held at the Conservatori de Música on 6 June, the following topic will be debated: "New technologies and social media networks in the dissemination of heritage: challenges and opportunities". Offering the potential to expand the Art Nouveau heritage, these tools also pose a great challenge for the cultural sector. Barcelona, Brussels, Budapest, Glasgow and Aveiro will be sharing their experiences with other cities on designing web pages, creating virtual archives, digitising pictures of historical monuments and their presence on social media networks.

The Réseau Art Nouveau Network is currently made up of sixteen cities and six institutions that promote academic and educational activities, to disseminate and study Art Nouveau through the support of the European Commission's 2007-2013 Culture Programme.

The network is noted as much for its enterprise and commitment as for putting the case for a rigorous and vigilant scientific approach for keeping professionals informed and shaping public opinion on the cultural importance of this heritage we have so near at hand. Which is why these two days of talks will be open to the public. Free participation with compulsory registration before 27 May. Download the programmes with their corresponding registration forms.
