Barcelona has obtained the best technical appraisal in the final deliberations for honouring the European Environmental Capital for 2012 and 2013, with a score of 168.3 out of 200, ahead of the other finalist cities, but in the end the candidates Vitòria and Nantes won out.

A delegation of representatives from the Department of the Environment led by the Fifth Deputy Mayor for the Environment, Imma Mayol, has upheld the application to the European Commission's judging panel, stressing the lines of action promoted for fostering a more sustainable and environmentally responsible city. The delegation has conveyed its congratulations, on behalf of the city of Barcelona, to the two cities awarded with the recognition of European Environmental Capital for the years 2012 and 2013.

The European Environmental Capital is an award to recognise the chosen city's commitment and set of policies and actions in relation to improving the environment. Included in the indicators judged by the European Commission's judging panel for assessing each application is local contribution to tackling climate change, local transport, urban green areas, sustainable use of the ground, nature and biodiversity, quality of local air, noise pollution, waste production and management, water consumption, waste water treatment and the City Council's environmental management.
