World Water Day

Visits to the sewerage network, Born's waterways and the inside of the Magic Fountain are just a few of the activities planned in Barcelona to mark World Water Day. The Beach Centre has offered a family activity during which participants learnt about the chemical composition of marine water and the impact of several pollutants.

To mark World Water Day and highlight the importance of this natural resource, the Beach Centre and the Fàbrica del Sol have organised several family activities, including visits to the sewers, the inside of the Magic Fountain and the Barri Gòtic's waterways.

Another of the activities was a workshop examining the properties of marine water, where participants, after wetting their feet for the demonstrations, were able to use several test-tubes and chemical elements to check the water's cloudiness, salinity and density.

One of the most popular experiments was the one showed the impact of pollutants on water. Pouring drops of soap, oil and polystyrene particles into the water, visitors saw how some pollutants join up and help to clean water up, while others, such as soap, dissolve and can no longer be removed.

"A lot of people think that nature lies outside Barcelona, that it's not here in the city, but that's just not true. That's why it's good for young children to learn that the beach has to be treated with respect and that rubbish mustn't be left on it or pollutants dumped into the sea, because young people are the future and it's them who'll have to act correctly another day", explains Mar Escarrabill, the Beach Centre's educator.

These workshops for examining water quality are not just weekend family activities, they are also held on school days, to raise awareness among school groups of the frailty of the marine ecosystem.
