International Rose Competition: from the 9th to the 11th of May

posted 16/04/2014

From the 9th to the 11th of May the Ajuntament de Barcelona (Barcelona's City Council), through the city's Àrea de Medi Ambient i Serveis Urbans (Environmental and Urban Services Section), is organizing the 14th edition of the International New Roses of Barcelona Competition in the Cervantes Rose Garden.

From the 9th to the 11th of May Barcelona's City Council, through the Environmental and Urban Services Section, is organizing the 14th edition of the International New Roses of Barcelona Competition in the Cervantes Rose Garden. Barcelona will also be the headquarters for the International Rose Convention from the 11th to the 14th of May. This year the theme of the convention is "Roses in the sun" and it is an event aimed at bringing together members of the World Federation of Rose Societies, both professionals and amateurs, as well as friends of roses from around the world. The Convention, which will be taking place in the Palau Reial, includes conferences and visits to the different rose gardens around Barcelona and surrounding areas as well as visits to the Pere Dot nursery (the most internationally renowned Catalan hybridizer) among others.

These two events will be taking place in Barcelona, coinciding perfectly with the first flowering of the roses in Barcelona, a Mediterranean city with a temperate climate that will be showing off its beauty and splendor just as the sunny spring weather arrives to the city as well. The Competition is the first in a series of events on the rose sector's calendar for conferences related to rose buyers' competitions and it is also one of the most consolidated events on the international scene.

The Rose Competition is offering, as it does every year, a program of events directed towards all kinds of people with its epicenter located at the Cervantes Rose Garden, an open park where the cultural and leisure events will be taking place. This year's event includes a concert given by the Municipal Band, floral art demonstrations, gastronomy and an open invitation to visitors to the Rose Garden to join in the popular vote to choose the City's Rose for 2014.

In light of Barcelona being named the Capital of the traditional Catalan Sardana dance in 2014, a new part of the event this year will include a variety of activities related to the Sardana dance, which will take place during the Rose Competition (including: a Sardanes performance and dance class, a dance for the public to join in and a poetry recital) as well as the presentation and planting of the Sardana Rose dedicated to the composer Carles Santiago. Some new additions to the program this year include guided visits to the Rose Garden to find out more about the varieties and species as well as a talk about "The Jujube and musical instruments" given by Pau Orriols.

The International New Roses Competition is organized by Barcelona's City Council and is also sponsored by Talio, Cespa, Urbaser i Ambitec, along with the collaboration of Caves Roger Goulard, Hotel Crowle Plaza BCN Fira Center, the Florists' Guild of Catalonia, l'Escola Superior de Hostaleria de Barcelona (Barcelona's Hospitality Institute of Higher-education) and the School of Floral Art of Catalonia.
