The General Library was set up in 1983, at the heart of Barcelona City Council's central services, as a library specialising in administration and local government, to cover the needs of local authority offices for information and documentation.
It stocks all of Barcelona City Council's municipal regulations and documents in all formats (paper, CD-ROMs/DVDs, videos, posters etc.) and any information resource that may relevant to the Council's goals.
Information resources incorporated in the collections of the General Library and the Departmental Libraries.
Barcelona City Council has digitised its printed collection of Barcelona economia - including its first issue in 1988 to Nº 75 in 2011 - for the sake of fostering knowledge, study and research on Barcelona and helping to preserve copies of that publication.
Barcelona City Council's General Library and the Department of Statistics have continued with the digitisation of this highly important reference publication: the Anuari estadístic de la ciutat de Barcelona (City of Barcelona Statistics Yearbook). So far, the collection has been digitised up to 1946.
To mark the centenary of the Barcelona Municipal Gazette, the General Library has digitised the first period of the publication (1914-1951). All this has been done this year, under the framework of several municipal-document digitisation projects. Digitisation will help to publicise and preserve this publication we can justly describe as historic.
